ABOUT

Throughout design school, I saw firsthand how mental health resources often felt clinical and disconnected from real experiences. This inspired 'Big Little Feelings' - a picture book that tackles emotional wellbeing through the universal language of illustration. By letting rich visuals tell the story instead of text, I created an accessible way for people to see their emotional journeys reflected and feel less alone. The project demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform personal struggles into shared experiences and make difficult conversations more approachable.

PROCESS

Storyboard → Mood Board → Iteration & Ideation → Final Outcome

Storyboard

I wanted the story to be set in Downtown Toronto. I tried my best to set the story in places around the city that would most likely be recognizable to only locals and were also personal to me without being too overt (if you know, you know).

The book follows the journey of Sparkle, a disco ball who wakes up one day feeling incomplete, with some of his mirror pieces missing. As Sparkle ventures out into the world, he encounters various experiences—some uplifting and others challenging—that impact how he feels about himself. Along the way, Sparkle is supported by his friend CMYK, who helps him understand the importance of patience, resilience, and community in his quest to find wholeness. The story is a heartwarming exploration of self-discovery, healing, and the role that others play in our lives.

Why a disco ball?

I chose a disco ball as the main character because I’ve always been captivated by how they reflect light in such a beautiful and mesmerizing way. Disco balls are often associated with joy and celebration, yet they are also delicate, with each small mirror contributing to their overall shine.

Sparkle the disco ball symbolizes the way we all navigate through life—sometimes feeling incomplete or insecure, but finding moments of light and connection that help us piece ourselves back together. Just as a disco ball relies on each mirror to reflect its full brilliance, we, too, rely on the support of our friends and community to shine our brightest. This character allowed me to explore themes of vulnerability, resilience, and the importance of those who help us on our journey of self-discovery.

Mood Board

I went on my camera roll and Pinterest to collect inspiration of animated objects for the characters, their expressions, and places in the city.
